A thigh lift reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin, and in some cases fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body.
If fitness and weight loss efforts have not achieved your goals for a body that is firmer, more youthful-looking and more proportionate to your overall body image, a surgical thigh lift may be right for you.
This surgery reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin, and in some cases fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body.
Candidates for thigh lift are:
* People whose weight is relatively stable
* Individuals with excess soft tissue along the inner or medial thigh region and/or the outer thigh
* Healthy individuals who do not have medical conditions that can impair healing or increase risk of surgery
* Individuals with a positive outlook and realistic goals for what thigh lift surgery can accomplish
* Individuals committed to leading a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition and fitness
Thigh lifts are not intended strictly for the removal of excess fat. Liposuction alone can remove excess fat deposits where skin has good elasticity and is able to naturally conform to new body contours. In cases where skin elasticity is poor, a combination of liposuction and thigh lift techniques may be recommended.
* You are physically healthy and at a stable weight
* You have realistic expectations
* You do not smoke
If you plan to become pregnant or lose weight in the future, you should discuss this with Dr. Hakan Gundogan. Scarring from previous thigh surgery may limit the results of your thigh lift procedure.
Thigh lifts are not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. Also, thigh lift operations cannot correct stretch marks, although these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised.
During the consultation, you will be asked about the results you would like to achieve from thigh lift. This will help Dr. Hakan Gundogan to understand your expectations and determine whether they realistically can be achieved.
Dr. Hakan Gundogan will take your photographs and examine your legs and buttocks while you are standing as well as lying down. Your skin tone and the degree of loose skin will be assessed.
Dr. Hakan Gundogan also will evaluate the amount of excess fat in your legs and the condition of your leg muscles.
You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, pregnancies, previous surgeries and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.
If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery. Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for a period of time before surgery. Dr. Hakan Gundogan will provide you with additional preoperative instructions.
Thigh lift may be performed on an outpatient basis. If this is the case, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and to stay with you for at least the next day or two. When thigh lift is performed in conjunction with medically necessary procedures such as hysterectomy or hernia repair, a short hospitalization may be required.
Your thigh lift operation will be performed in a hospital.
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. Often, a general anesthetic is administered, so that you will be asleep throughout the procedure. Thigh lift may be performed using local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. When surgery is completed, you will be taken into a recovery area where you will continue to be closely monitored. In many instances, small drain tubes will have been placed within the abdominal tissues to help avoid accumulation of fluids. Gauze or other dressings may be applied to your abdomen and covered with tape or an elastic bandage.
You may be permitted to go home after a few hours, unless you and Dr. Hakan Gundogan have determined that you will stay in the hospital overnight.
Medications are administered for your comfort during thigh lift surgery. The choices include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Dr. Hakan Gundogan will recommend the best choice for you.
Incision patterns vary based on the area or areas to be treated, degree of correction and patient and surgeon preference.
One common technique used for a thigh lift places incisions in the groin, extending downward wrapping around the back of the thigh. The underlying tissue matrix will be reshaped and tightened, and skin will be reduced and re draped resulting in more proportionate and smoother body contours.
You may qualify for a minimal incision medial thigh lift, which involves an incision only in the groin area. Your surgeon will determine what’s appropriate.
Deep support sutures within underlying tissues help to form the newly shaped contours. Sutures close the skin incisions.
The smoother tighter contouring that result from a thigh lift are apparent almost immediately, although initially obscured by some swelling and bruising.
You may be required to wear a compression garment for several weeks following your procedure to minimize swelling and support the tissues as they heal.
Following a thigh lift, skin quality is dramatically improved both in appearance and feel.
The day after surgery, you will be encouraged to get out of bed for short walks to promote blood circulation. Although you may not be able to stand up completely straight, it is best if you do not sit for long periods of time during the first several days. Straining, bending and lifting must be avoided; since these activities might cause increased swelling or even bleeding. You may be instructed to sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees.
Any surgical drains probably will be removed within a week following surgery, at which time your dressings may also be changed or removed. Depending on the thigh lift technique used, you may be instructed to wear a support garment for several weeks. Generally, stitches will be removed in stages over a period of approximately one or two weeks.
You will notice swelling and bruising, which is to be expected. The bruising and much of the swelling will disappear over a period of weeks. However, it may be months before all swelling subsides and you see the final result of your thigh lift. You may also notice some numbness over portions of the inner and outer thigh areas, and this may persist for several months. Incisions will initially be red or pink in color. They will remain this way for many months following surgery and may even appear to worsen before they finally begin to fade.
It is important to realize that the amount of time it takes for recovery varies greatly among individuals. Depending on the extent of your thigh lift and your general physical condition, you may be able to return to non-strenuous work anywhere from one to three weeks after surgery. In many instances, you can resume most of your normal activities, including some form of mild exercise, after a few weeks. You may continue to experience some mild, periodic discomfort and swelling during this time, but such feelings are normal. Severe pain should be reported to your doctor.
Any sexual activity should be avoided for a minimum of two weeks, and Dr. Hakan Gundogan may advise you to wait longer.
Thigh lift will enhance your body contour by making your inner and outer thigh areas firmer and flatter. You may find that you feel more comfortable in your clothing and are more confident about your appearance.
The incisions from the procedure will heal and fade over time. It is important to realize, however, that the incision lines will be permanently visible. In some instances, they will eventually be only faint lines. Certain individuals may have incision lines that are more noticeable. Fortunately, the incisions for your thigh lift are usually in locations concealed by most bathing suits and undergarments.
Unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant, your thighs should remain firmer and flatter for many years. However, gravity and the effects of aging will eventually take their toll.
You will return to Dr. Hakan Gundogan 's office for follow-up care at prescribed intervals, at which time your progress would be evaluated.
Please remember that the relationship with Dr. Hakan Gundogan does not end when you leave the operating room. If you have questions or concerns during your recovery, or need additional information at a later time, you should contact Dr. Hakan Gundogan.
